Your Aromatase Inhibitor

Aromatase Inhibitors have had a huge impact on reducing the risk of breast cancer recurrence in post menopausal women.

Aromatase Inhibitors are a form of endocrine therapy, that works for estrogen receptor positive tumours by reducing the amount of circulating oestrogen in the blood. Examples of these medicines are Femara, Aromasin and Arimidex.

They are mostly well tolerated but some women stop them prematurely because they don’t think they need them, or they don’t like taking them due to side effects.

Currently the recommended duration of treatment is five to ten years.

They can increase the risk of thinning of the bones or osteoporosis, though Dr Adams and the other doctors involved in your care can monitor for this and treat it if necessary.

They can also cause other symptoms in some women which lead them to stop them prematurely.

These include:

  • Hot flushing and night sweats
  • Joint stiffness or pain
  • Urogenital symptoms – vaginal dryness, sexual problems
  • Mood problems

It is most important if you experience side effects that you raise this with Dr Adams.

There may be alternative drugs to use, or she may be able to help you manage these side effects so that you can continue this important part of your treatment.
